One of my recent pieces is this stylized comedic shot I developed during my final class at Animation Mentor. The setup is a character throwing a birthday party for his dog, and the humor comes when there is a cut to the next shot and we see a tiny dog and his reaction.
My main goal was to create a performance that reads clearly and lands comedically, so I focused heavily on strong posing, timing, and contrast between anticipation and payoff. I pushed the poses to be more graphic and readable, especially in silhouette, and held key poses long enough to let the audience register the emotion before moving on.
From a technical standpoint, I paid close attention to spacing and rhythm to control the comedic timing. I also made sure the staging supports the idea at every moment—keeping the focus on the character’s reactions rather than overcomplicating the scene.
One challenge I ran into was that midway through production, I needed to extend the shot significantly. Instead of just adding filler, I reworked the beats of the performance to improve the pacing and actually strengthen the comedic arc. I added a clearer buildup before the main reaction, which ended up making the final payoff stronger.
This project really helped me improve my ability to think in terms of performance clarity and timing, especially for stylized animation that needs to communicate quickly and effectively.
